He then completed his Neurosurgery Residency through Michigan State University under Drs. Fernando Diaz, Daniel Pieper and Teck Mun Soo focusing on Minimally Invasive Spine and Cranial Surgery. During residency, he also completed a prestigious Neuro-Oncology fellowship at the world renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he was trained in cutting edge cancer surgery of the brain and spine. Following residency, Dr. Setty completed an Open and Endoscopic Skull Base Fellowship under the tutelage of Drs. Paul Gardner and Juan Fernandez-Miranda at the University of Pittsburgh, the first and largest center for cranial base surgery in the country. During this time, he was also trained in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery by the legendary Dr. Dade Lunsford before returning to Michigan in 2017.
Dr. Setty’s practice focuses on minimally invasive approaches to the spine and brain. This allows for smaller incisions, less tissue disruption, less pain, faster recoveries and better overall outcomes. He has performed thousands of complex brain and spine operations for his patients and continues to innovate in the field of minimally invasive neurosurgery. Dr. Setty has also published dozens of peer reviewed articles along with authoring several book chapters and has lectured at numerous national meetings. In addition, he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Oakland University Department of Neurosurgery where he teaches both residents and medical students.
Outside of his daily practice, Dr. Setty frequently travels with various medical missions to provide Neurosurgical care to underserved parts of the world. He has taken three trips to Ukraine to operate on injured soldiers and train local surgeons in modern spine trauma techniques. In addition, he has taken six trips to the Philippines and two to Guatemala to operate on dozens of children with craniofacial abnormalities. In his free time, Dr. Setty enjoys traveling, local sports and golf, where he maintains a 3 handicap and has extensive experience with patients returning to play after spine surgery.
